At the age of 21, Jen gained admission to Chinese Culture University's Department of Physical Education after two attempts. During his university years, he sharpened his guitar skills while working at Dunhuang Musical Instruments, where he later focused on composing music.
Initially aiming for a career in sports broadcasting to promote athletics, Jen shifted his focus to music after being signed as a singer by New Century Workshop, facilitated by his guitar teacher who had joined the company as a producer. In 1990, during his senior year at university, he released his debut album "Towards the Rainbow," marking his entry into the entertainment industry. During this time, he also played in the underground band Snake.
To concentrate on his career, Jen postponed his military service for a year. Following his military service in the Air Force Art Troupe, he found himself under Rock Records after New Century Workshop was acquired. During this period, he hosted children's and animal television programs and pursued interests in racing and Peking opera stunts.
In 2005, Jen moved to EMI Records, marking a new phase in his singing career. Later, he signed with East Asia Records for both film and music projects after leaving PolyGram.
Richie Jen's personal life includes the birth of his daughter Rati in 2005 and his son Cody in 2008, both born in Hong Kong.
