Chiu joined the volleyball team at Hu Shi Elementary School in the second grade. During his time at Cheng Cheng Junior High School, he served as the vice-captain of the volleyball team.
During his time at Oriental Institute of Technology, Chiu served as the captain of the volleyball team. He was successfully selected for the High School All-Star Volleyball Team during national selections. After graduation, he enrolled in Taipei Physical Education College and joined the volleyball team there.
Chiu was once selected as a player for the Chinese national team and later became a reserve player for the national team.
From September 2006, he began his alternative military service in sports. He joined the military volleyball team organized by the Ministry of National Defense and the Sports Affairs Council.
