Jackson's father is Wang Rui Ji, former coach of the Hong Kong national fencing team and a one time winner in Asian Games 1978. His mother is Zhou Ping, a gold medalist at the World Gymnastics Championships in 1982. Jackson had received training in gymnastics together with his brother and won 1st place in the acrobatic gymnastics championship for the mixed pair category when he was 9 years old before switching to fencing.
Jackson started his fencing career when he was 10. The first time his father brought him to a match, Jackson immediately fell in love with fencing and confidently said it's the sport of his life. Since then, he has been trained by his own father as well as other professional coaches and achieved multiple awards and winnings for Hong Kong national fencing team.
Jackson attended American International School in Hong Kong since primary. Jackson was scouted by JYP Entertainment among 2000 other contestants in 2010. He wanted to become a trainee, but his parents were against it at first. His father made a deal that he would let him go to Korea if Jackson can be the best fencer in Asia. Jackson eventually won first place at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship.
Jackson came to Korea on July 3rd, 2011, and became a JYP trainee for 2 and a half years before his debut in GOT7. His first pre-debut appearance was on an episode of Mnet's reality-survival program WIN: Who Is Next, which aired on September 6, 2013. Jackson, alongside Mark, BamBam and Yugyeom, was competing against the YG Entertainment trainees: Team A and Team B, who are now known as WINNER (Team A) and iKON (Team B). Jackson's first appearance as an official member of GOT7 was in the teaser for their debut on January 6 with Yugyeom. Got7's music video came out on January 6.
On 26 June 2017, JYP Entertainment announced the release of Wang's first solo album in China, as well as the establishment of a dedicated management team, named 'Team Wang', for his activities in China. His first single, an English track named "Papillon", was released on 26th August.
On January 10th, 2021, JYP Entertainment initially announced that his and his members' exclusive contracts would expire. On January 11th, 2021, JYP Entertainment released an official statement reiterating that all members will leave the company after their exclusive contract expires on January 19th, 2021. He joined Sublime Artist Agency after his contract expiration with JYP Entertainment.
On August 24, 2023, his album “MAGIC MAN”, which he is doing his first solo world tour with, won Pop Album of the Year at the Wave Music Awards. He is currently working on “MAGIC MAN 2” as well.
