He originally wanted to be a laboratory researcher and did not realize that he would become an actor and singer. By 2005, he had already begun starring in Korean dramas, such as sitcom Orange and A Man and a Woman in 2004. He had said his final dream is to become a renowned movie director.
He previously attended Seoul National University (College of Dentistry) until he dropped out to focus on his acting career. He was a senior at Chung-Ang University, where he majored in acting.
On April 28, 2009, he left the public for mandatory military service of two years. 80000 of Kim Jeong Hoon's fans from Japan, Korea, Turkey and China gathered to see him off to serve the country.
He is known in New Zealand for having a resemblance to Dennis Kwan, a Chinese New Zealand R&B singer and dancer who rose to fame through a youtube video performing a cover of Korean hit single Wedding Dress by R&B artist Taeyang. In 2002, she began her career as a singer of the short-lived three-member girl group "LUV", however, the group disbanded the following year due to individual goals.
Following the disbandment of LUV, Jeon released her first solo album, "Love Somebody" on July 31. She ventured into acting and appeared in her first television drama, "Sang Doo! Let's Go to School" and was cast in the 2004 horror film "Dead Friend". On 23 September 2005, she found mainstream success with her second album "In My Fantasy". "2AM", a song produced by Mr. Tyfoon, showcased her seductive side and dancing abilities. However, it came under heavy criticism for being too suggestive during performances and required the cuter, less suggestive song "Bin-Go" to be promoted. Jeon was later cast in the comedic film "Wet Dreams 2" and TV show "Only You". In 2008, she decided to focus on her acting career.

He graduated from Salesian High School and later attended the Law program at Chosun University but dropped out and moved to Seoul where he worked at a pharmaceutical company before joining a theater company to pursue a career in acting.
He applied several times to become an actor but was rejected, so he made his debut in 1965 as part of the 2nd open recruitment for voice actors at MBC as many voice actors went on to have successful acting careers. He made his TV debut in 1970 with a role in the anti-Communism drama "Hong Kong 101st Street" and later, he became a cult TV star in the 1970s for portraying eccentric men that can't quite fit in with mainstream South Korean society.
However, as trendy dramas became mainstream in the 1990s, there was no room for veteran actors like him, and he suffered financial difficulties as he was unable to work. He tried to leave the country during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Crisis but could not leave.
In 1999, he returned to TV with a role in "The Legendary Doctor Hur Jun" that left a deep impression among the audience and TV critics which lead to a second heyday with roles in dramas and movies. He often mentioned director Bong Joon Ho as the one who rescued his career by inviting him to appear in the 2000 movie "Barking Dogs Never Bite".
In 2006, he won the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding performance in "The Host" and, in 2017, he was able to walk the red carpet in the Cannes Film Festival as cast member of the movie "Okja".
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and after a round of chemotherapy he was told he was in remission and suspended treatment. However, the cancer returned and he died on September 18, 2023.
